Research Interests

I have general research interests in the following areas of study:

  • Species interactions in wetland plant communities.
  • Spatial patterns and community structure in vegetation.
  • Climate change and its influence on the distribution of species and communities.
  • Land-use and environmental change in the Thompson-Okanagan region of British Columbia.
  • Land-use change and biodiversity issues in the southern Okanagan.
  • Land-use change in the flooded grasslands of Brazil and its influence on the landscape genetic diversity of the lowland tapir (Tapirus
    terrestris).
  • Computer applications, education technology, and modeling in physical geography.
  • Use of Wiki technology in educating Earth Science information to global internet citizens.

Current Research Projects

1) Landuse Change and Biodiversity Reduction in the Southern Okanagan Valley: 1860 to 2004 (Dr. Michael Pidwirny, Principal Investigator)

The Southern Okanagan Valley of British Columbia is home to more than 50 species of plants and animals that have been identified as being either: threatened, endangered, or vulnerable. Further, the Southern Okanagan Valley's grassland, desert shrub, Ponderosa Pine forest, and wetland/riparian habitat types are some of Canada's most endangered ecosystems. The main factor contributing to species and ecosystem diversity decline in this region of Canada is the conversion of the natural habitats to various types of human land-use. Over the past 100 years, the amount of natural landscape that has been modified into urban, agricultural, and recreation land-use types has progressively increased because of human population growth and economic progress. Future population and economic growth is predicted to degrade the biodiversity resources further in this region of British Columbia. My research project will document the nature of human-mediated land-use conversion in the Southern Okanagan Valley and will examine this modification of the environment in terms of biodiversity reduction.

This project will have three stages:

In stage one (spring 2006 to winter 2007), I will compare the state of the landscape prior to non-indigenous settlement (1860) to the year 2004. This documentation will be done using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to analyze datasets derived from aerial photographs, topographic maps, and other forms of spatial data. This study will determine absolute measures of natural habitat loss, will calculate how much land is being used for each land-use type, and will provide a measure of habitat fragmentation. Results from this preliminary study will be used as a base to apply for a grant in December 2007 of approximately $25,000 from the Endangered Species Recovery Fund, which is jointly administered by the World Wildlife Fund and Environment Canada.

Stage two (Fall 2007 to winter 2008) of the project will use additional datasets to determine more accurately the temporal progression of land-use change between 1860 to 2004. Ideally, I would like to determine rates change in land-use at a temporal resolution of approximately 10 years. From this analysis a predictive GIS model will be constructed to identify important natural habitats in danger of land-use conversion in the near future.

The last stage of this project (spring 2008 to summer 2009) will examine the relationship of land-use change in the Southern Okanagan to the decline of species in this region.

2) Conservation of the Lowland Tapir Across the Dynamic Landscape of the Wetlands, Brazil (Dr. Michael Russello, Principal Investigator, Dr. Michael Pidwirny, Co-Investigator and Dr. Anders Goncalves da Silva, Co-Investigator)

The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world that has not been substantially modified by humans. These flooded grasslands near the borders of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay constitute one of the most species rich and fragile wetland ecosystems in the world. Despite its tremendous conservation value, little is known about the formative processes at work across this dynamic landscape in shaping the distribution of the region’s flora and fauna. Recent interest in the economic development of the Pantanal is threatening to reduce the intensity and frequency of annual flood cycles, with unknown consequences for the local biota. To effectively protect and manage this rich landscape, we require knowledge on the interrelationship among the three levels of biodiversity: the landscape, the organisms, and their genetic diversity. Given this broad hierarchy of scale and complex interplay of both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors, we propose an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the dynamics governing the Pantanal, employing a suite of novel genetic analyses coupled with landscape and population modeling. Our focus is on the study of population dynamics and critical habitat for the lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris), a landscape species with a large home range and disproportionate impact on the structure and function of the Pantanal ecosystem. We chose to concentrate our study on a landscape species, as the protection of T. terrestris will simultaneously protect organisms with smaller, overlapping geographic ranges that depend upon similarly structured habitat. In addition, enhanced understanding of how proposed development and channelization projects will alter the patterns of distribution and associated ecological and evolutionary processes governing the lowland tapir will contribute significantly towards guiding the development of a conservation action plan for the Pantanal as a whole.

Such a large-scale and ambitious study requires both an interdisciplinary approach and strong partnerships within the study nation. To that end, this research brings together the expertise of Dr. Michael Russello, a population geneticist with broad experience in applying molecular tools to conservation-related questions, and Dr. Michael Pidwirny, a physical geographer with expertise in modeling patterns of landscape change. Molecular and population genetic methodologies will be used to reconstruct the distribution of genetic variation of lowland tapirs across the Pantanal, allowing for inferences into patterns of movement and connectivities among populations in this spatially and temporally dynamic habitat. These results will be overlaid onto a map of the region within a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) framework, containing information on natural features of the landscape, including changes in lowland tapir habitat availability over different scenarios of flooding intensity and frequency. This basic information will then be used to construct models of landscape change that predict the impact of proposed channelization and other development initiatives on the distribution and connectivities of lowland tapirs in the region. The value of such a predictive model at this stage of predevelopment is in substantially informing alternative approaches and mitigation strategies associated with these land-use initiatives that may minimize the negative impacts on local biodiversity. Information from this study will likewise contribute significantly to a conservation action plan for the Pantanal ecosystem, in general, and the lowland tapir, specifically.

This study will involve direct collaboration with scientists and managers at the Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (IPÊ). Headquarted in Nazaré Paulista, Sao Paulo State, the IPÊ is considered the third largest NGO in Brazil and is a well-positioned leader in grass-roots conservation at the local and national levels. Collaborators at IPÊ are conducting a parallel ecological study of the lowland tapir and will greatly assist in sample collection for DNA analysis as well as for ground-truthing landscape models. This international collaboration will be formalized by way of the requested funding for a postdoctoral position for Anders Goncalves da Silva, a Brazilian national with significant experience studying the ecology and population management of the lowland tapir.

Scholarship

My website www.physicalgeography.net has received about 12 million page visits in five years and is the foremost web portal on the Internet for educational information dealing with Physical Geography. I plan on enhancing the information found on this site over the next few years. The content of the online textbook Fundamentals of Physical Geography found at this website is used in many university courses for reference. It has been very positively reviewed by several educational agencies and the journals Science and New Scientist. This freely available information source has also been cited about 40 times as a general source of information for “enhanced” online articles in the journal Science. Searching my name on Google reveals that my online resources are linked to well over 10,000 web pages on the Internet. Over the next few years I plan on developing a second web portal this time dealing with environmental science and related issues. This site will be very similar to www.physicalgeography.net providing freely available information for general public consumption and enhancing the educational experience of university students seeking knowledge in this area of study.

My two self published electronic books have been quite successful. The e-book Physical Geography Glossary of Terms has been downloaded about 15,000 times. The two editions of World Geography Factbook (2000 and 2001) have been downloaded about 35,000 times. Both of these works are free. I plan continuing work on these two items in the future.
